Sylvia Likens was one of two adolescent daughters born to traveling carnival workers. In 1965, a carnival setting wasn’t the best place to raise two young girls. Though her parents, Lester and Betty, were known for taking their sons with them, they wanted a more stable life for their daughters. On October 26, 1965, police found Sylvia Likens’s emaciated corpse—covered with more than 150 wounds ranging from burns to cuts—sprawled on a filthy mattress in the Indianapolis home of 37-year-old Gertrude Baniszewski, mother of seven and the architect of the girl’s gruesome death. The gruesome murder of 16-year-old Sylvia Likens at the hands of the Baniszewski family is still considered one of the most disturbing crimes in the history of Indiana. While the violent crime itself will likely never leave the discussion, the shattered family that Sylvia left behind is far less talked about. Sylvia Likens died Oct. 26, 1965.
